Julia and Mihail’s wedding began far from the scale and theatrical character of the reception that would follow. At Agriturismo Il Casale degli Ulivi, the morning belonged to the people closest to them, with the countryside, cypress trees and quiet surroundings creating an understated beginning to the day.
Mihail prepared with his friends outdoors, where pale tailoring, dark green details and black sunglasses created a confident visual contrast against the landscape. Julia’s morning had a different rhythm. Her structured gown, lace sleeves, jewellery and long veil introduced a softer language, while her bridesmaids moved around her through the familiar rituals of getting ready.
The most interesting photographs were not always the ones we had planned. They appeared between those moments, while someone adjusted the dress, during a glance across the room, or in the few seconds when everyone forgot about the camera.
That is often where a wedding story really begins.
From the Roman Countryside to Villa Il Lago dei Cigni
Arriving at Villa Il Lago dei Cigni changed the visual character of the day immediately.
The venue does not behave like a neutral background. White architecture, classical sculpture, water, gardens, large decorative interiors and the monumental fountain all compete for attention. Rather than trying to reduce that character, we decided to use it.
Some portraits place Julia and Mihail clearly at the centre of the composition. In others, they become deliberately smaller within the architecture, allowing the scale of the villa to become part of the photograph.
This contrast was important to us.
A Villa Il Lago dei Cigni wedding offers enough visual variety that there is no reason for every portrait to follow the same formula. The white sculptural areas lent themselves to cleaner compositions. The gardens softened the photographs. Inside, chandeliers and large framed paintings created something more formal and theatrical.
The venue changed, so the photography changed with it.
Portraits That Belong to the Place
We approached the portraits with intention, but without trying to turn the wedding into a fashion production.
There is a difference.
A photograph can be carefully composed without feeling artificial. Architecture can guide the frame without becoming more important than the people inside it.
Julia’s gown worked beautifully against the pale surfaces of the villa, while Mihail’s black tuxedo created a much stronger graphic contrast. Inside, one of the large paintings became a frame within the frame, giving the portraits a completely different mood from those created outside only minutes earlier.
Then there were the photographs that could never have been planned in advance.
Julia holding a tiny kitten. Heart shaped sunglasses. Champagne between portraits. A smile that appeared after the photograph was supposedly finished.
Those images are not interruptions to the story.
They are the story.
The Architecture of Villa Il Lago dei Cigni
One of the reasons Villa Il Lago dei Cigni photographs so well is the relationship between its architecture and the surrounding landscape.
The monumental fountain has enough scale to carry a photograph on its own. When the couple is placed further away, the image becomes less about portraiture and more about place.

This transition is one of our favourite parts of a wedding day to photograph because people begin to behave differently.
The schedule becomes less visible. Conversations last longer. Champagne appears. Guests move freely between tables and gardens.
The photographs become quieter too.
Julia standing in the last warm light. Friends walking beneath the trees. A table beginning to fill. Small gestures between people who no longer realise they are being photographed.
There is a particular kind of elegance in these moments because nothing needs to be added.
The setting is already enough.
Villa Il Lago dei Cigni After Dark
After sunset, the same venue became almost unrecognisable.
The monumental fountain was illuminated. Chandeliers began to glow. Reflections replaced the clean architectural whites of the afternoon, and the visual language of the wedding shifted again.
The cake appeared against the architecture. Guests moved closer. Music replaced conversation.
At this point, directing became less interesting than simply paying attention.
The photographs became more instinctive.
Sparks cutting through the frame. Friends lifting Mihail above the crowd. Guests dancing beneath chandeliers with coloured lights in their hands. Julia moving through the reception. Faces appearing and disappearing at the edges of the image.
Black and white photography became particularly important during these moments because it removed distraction and allowed movement, gesture and expression to take over.
The evening did not need to look perfect.
It needed to feel alive.
A Photographer’s Perspective on Villa Il Lago dei Cigni
Having photographed a complete wedding here, what interests us most about Villa Il Lago dei Cigni is not one particular backdrop. It is the way the property allows a wedding story to keep changing without constantly changing location.
The white architectural areas work beautifully for clean editorial portraits because they already contain strong geometry and texture. The gardens offer something softer, particularly as the light begins to fall later in the day.
The bridge and water are better suited to wider compositions where the couple can exist within the landscape rather than dominate it. The monumental fountain deserves the same approach. Its scale becomes much more powerful when there is enough distance around the couple.
The interiors introduce a completely different visual language. Paintings, chandeliers and decorative details give the photographs more weight and formality, which is useful when the rest of the gallery has been dominated by gardens and pale architecture.
Then night changes everything again.
The fountain, reception spaces and artificial lighting create another opportunity for portraits without repeating what was already photographed earlier.
For us, that variety is what makes a Villa Il Lago dei Cigni wedding especially interesting to photograph.
