It boasts of hosting the best-loved Christmas ritual in Rome. Candles light up the 124-step staircase during Christmas Eve with music playing. At night, you can behold one of the beauties of the world. You can view its greatest treasure, which is a wooden statue of the Child Jesus. According to history, the wooden statue was carved from an olive tree taken from the Garden of Gethsemane.
There are tales of believing that the status has the capacity of healing terminally ill people. These tales went as far as people believing that the status possesses the power of raising people from the dead. The original status was stolen in 1994, which up until today hasn’t been found. Rather, when you enter the church, you will find a replacement to the original status.
The Interior of Santa Maria in Aracoeli
The beauty of the Church will be appreciated when you view the interior. The interior of the church is your perfect place where you could make your wedding an unforgettable. The church has three naves, which is divided by 22 Roman columns. These columns are not the same considering the fact that they were taken from different Roman buildings. The third column on the left side of the church has a Latin inscription ‘a cubicolo augustorum’, which means from the chambers of Emperor August. The church has 22 columns with none of the columns the same. These columns were taken from the Roman ruins. The wooden ceiling of the church is decorated with paintings displaying the Battle of Lepanto, which was where the Holy League defeated the fleet of the Ottoman Empire.
